Lamanai, Mayan city in Belize
We have already visited some sites are representative of the Mayan culture within the territory of Belize, such as the ruins of Xunantunich or the spectacular cave Actun Tunichil Muknal, but today we will talk a little town that houses an impressive historical legacy of the same civilization, and that is known as Lamanai, which means "submerged crocodile".
This beautiful pre-Columbian city is spread along the Lake of the New River surrounded by thick jungle and took his time of splendor between the years 500 BC and 1700 a. C.
At Lamanai can contemplate a number of pyramids of origin and different pre-classical figures that are recorded on the Mayan stelae, lintels and panels showing the history of civilization itself and its most representative characters dressed in exquisite clothes and jewelry, according to it is believed, are an imitation of the images they saw in their native rituals and then were embodied in these works that have stood the test of time.
Perhaps what stands out most in the history of Lamanai is an unusual event that occurred in this part of Belize where the Maya drove them off to the conquerors and managed to become stronger while they were settled in this place.
In order that the place is known even more and receive higher numbers of visitors are currently under way deep restorations in the archeological ruins.
