Shillong, also referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’ is the capital city of Meghalaya. Meghalaya is one of the seven states situated in the eastern parts of India known as seven sisters. If translated literally, Meghalaya means ‘Abode of the Clouds’. Situated at a height of 1520 metres, this picturesque land is about 3-hrs drive from Guwahati and is blessed with a pleasant climate throughout the year. The city is startlingly clean and reflects Victorian influence.
There are a mixed tribal community ranging from Khasis, Garos, and Jayantias. Most people practice Christianity and the folks are too warm and accommodating. One unique feature prevalent among the society is that most of the tribes are matriarchal, i.e., woman dominance is more. Unless one is on a regional excursion, 3 to 4 days are enough to savour the beauty of the city.
You may visit some breathtaking locales around this beautiful sleepy and calm town. Shillong is known for its peaks and waterfalls. Shillong peak has its highest point at 1,965 m above the sea level, and at a distance of 10 km from the city. The roads are spotless with a stunning panoramic view. Springtime witnesses special prayers being offered by the Hima Mylliem priests, to the goddess residing in those peaks. Several waterfalls surround the city. A must see ones are Elephant Falls, Bedon and Bishop Falls, Crimosine falls, Sweet falls, and Spread Eagle falls.
Venturing into the Mawsmai caves is an explorer’s delight. This 100-yearr old limestone structures, jagged with the stalactites and stalagmites are thoroughly enjoyable and awe-inspiring. Nature lovers should visit Mawphlang too. Known as the ‘sacred groove’, it’s a botanist’s delight. And of course, not to forget the old churches, one of them is as old as 150 years.
