After experiencing the historical magnificence of Rajashtan you should now visit Mathura and Vrindavan, in Uttar Pradesh. Hindusim without the philosophy of Lord Krishna is meaningless. Mathura and Vrindavan are gorgeous places where you can get to understand about this God who is a darling of each and every Hindu household. This is an ideal place to go on a family vacation. Mathura is ‘Braj Bhoomi’ or the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Mathura is a place of temples. The Dwarakadhish temple built in 1814 is an outstanding example of the rich Hindu sculpture and architecture. The temple was taken over by the Vallabha sect descendents and it is located in the central region of Mathura. People come from far and wide to visit the ‘Braj Bhoomi’ or Krishna Janma Bhoomi. According to Hindu mythology Lord Krishna was born in a prison and a temple is built on the same sacred spot now. The Kusum Sarovar and the Radha Kunj are epitomes of celestial serenity. If you are enthusiastic about the Indian art you should visit the Government Museum where you get to see antiques from the Gupta and Kushan eras (400 B.C.-1200 A.D., also known as the Golden Age of the Hindus). There are some rare pieces of artistic magnificence from the Mathura School of Art in the Museum. You should always try to visit Mathura during Janmashthami (the birthday of Lord Krishna, generally in the month of August) to enjoy the festive spirits of this city.

Your trip to Mathura cannot be fulfilled without a visit to its neighbor Vrindavan (about 15 kms. From Mathura). Lord Krishna spent some beautiful moments with his consort Radha and brother Balarama at Raman Reti. There is a temple at Nidhivana, a place where Krishna would take rest with his consort Radha. The Samadhi of Swami Haridasa the founder of Banke Behari Temple is found at the entrance of Nidhivana. His disciple Tansen, the musical genius of Akabar’s period was also from Nidhivana. The samadhis of Great Saints like Jiva goswami, Lokaknatha Goswami, Bhugarbha Goswami, and Prabhunadha Goswami are in Vrindavan. The graceful Yamuna River where Krishna would spend time playing the flute and playing with the Gopis flows between Mathura and Vrindavan. You can visit its Kesi Ghat.
